Her latest endeavor is the Engage network, a nonprofit social venture she co-founded last year to collaborate across issues and organizations. “It goes way beyond my story and my message,” Hill says. She spent many of the years after the tree-sit traveling and speaking all over the world. “Often people will come up to me and thank me for sitting in a tree for two years. They are so enamored of what I did, yet I know that their enthusiasm for the Luna tree-sit is just a reflection of a deeper yearning of their souls,” she says.

Hill responds to this yearning for purpose with a question: “What is it that makes you stretch to be more powerful and more magical than your mind could believe?” This question has blossomed into one of the Engage Network’s programs, aptly called What’s Your Tree? From North Carolina to Texas to California, small groups of people gather in living rooms with a curriculum based on Hill’s story and writings. For seven weeks, these groups work on finding purpose, building community, and undertaking environmental and social action. They work, as Julia says, “at finding their own trees.”

FIRMLY ROOTED: First through Circle of Life, and now through the Engage Network, Hill brings people together to seek purpose and act on it.
