To spread her message, Newman co-authored (with Joseph D’Agnese) The Newman’s Own Organics Guide to a Good Life: Simple Measures That Benefit Y and the Place You Live. Her own home, a small bungalow in Santa Cruz, has photovoltaic panels on the roof, which offset her energy use and feed back the grid. She grows some of her own produce and also composts. “I just go clothesline last year, so I can save energy that way too,” she adds.

Newman points to outdoor clothing and gear retailer Patagonia as a company she’d like to emulate. “Their commitment as a company goes beyond philanthropy. They use 100 percent organic cotton. They want all of their clothes to be recyclable by 2010. Those kinds of goals are astonishing,” she says. “I want to be like them!” 0
